Michael’s Off-Grid Campervan Electrical Setup — Ready for the Scottish Mountains (and Everest!)

We love a good campervan story — and this one’s incredible!

Michael came to us with a big adventure in mind. He’s converting a campervan so he can train in the rugged Scottish mountains ahead of his Mount Everest summit challenge. Yep… Everest! Naturally, training in the middle of nowhere means you need a rock-solid electrical system to keep your essentials running off-grid — no campsites, no hook-ups, just pure freedom.

But here’s the really exciting part… Michael’s entire Everest preparation journey is being filmed by the BBC! So the off-grid system we installed in his van will be seen on TV as part of his story. How cool is that?

Michael came to us with a specific budget and clear goals, and we were able to offer him a few different package options. He went with one that’s perfect for his off-grid training needs — and we’re excited to share what we installed!

⚡ What We Installed (In Plain English)

Campervan electrics can sound complicated, but we like to keep things simple. Here’s what went into Michael’s system — and what each bit does:

🔌 MultiPlus 12/1200/50-16 230V Inverter/Charger

This is the heart of the system. It turns 12V battery power into 230V, so Michael can plug in his laptop, chargers, or even a small kettle. It also works as a charger when connected to mains hook-up.

🔋 2 x 12V/100Ah AGM Super Cycle Batteries

These heavy-duty batteries store Michael’s power. 100Ah means they hold a lot of charge — and two gives him double the capacity. Perfect for life off-grid.

📱 Victron SmartShunt

A clever gadget that acts like a fuel gauge for the batteries. It shows exactly how much power is left through a smartphone app — so no guesswork when you’re in the mountains.

🛑 Victron BatteryProtect

This smart device protects the batteries from over-draining by automatically turning off non-essential gadgets when the power gets low.

🔄 Cyrix-ct 12/24V-120A Battery Combiner

This connects the van’s engine battery to the leisure batteries while driving, charging them up on the go — and safely disconnects them when the engine’s off.

⚡ Victron Energy Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC Battery Charger

Works alongside the Cyrix, providing a steady, controlled charge from the alternator to the leisure batteries. A must-have for modern vans.

🔧 Fuse Holders, Busbars, Victron Switch & Cabling

The essential parts that keep everything safe, neat and running smoothly behind the scenes.

🌄 Why This System Is Perfect for Michael

Michael’s going to be camping off-grid in remote mountain locations, so he needed a system that’s reliable, tough, and easy to manage.

This setup means he can:

✅ Charge his phone, head torches, GPS, and camera

✅ Run a 12V fridge to keep food chilled

✅ Power a small heater or electric blanket in freezing weather

✅ Keep his lights and laptop running when planning routes or checking forecasts

Charge everything while driving

And thanks to the smart controls and protective features, Michael can relax knowing his system won’t let him down — even in the middle of nowhere.
